Skin, skin, skin- June.

Mama says she doesn't like summer time for a number of reasons. First, it's too hot (we hit 80 today and she withered). Next, you have to wear less clothes when it's hot and she prefers to be fully covered. Finally, she hates mosquitoes. And we've got them bad here. Swarm you on your way to the car in the middle of the afternoon bad. Bite you on the bottom of your feet while you're wearing shoes bad! We're all for the green movement, but we really hope they spray for skeeters in North Carolina.

Henry doesn't care about the bug pr0blem, so he still wants to be outside. So every day we go out and spray down with bug dope once every 3 minutes. And this leads to mama's fourth least favorite thing about summer- daily baths. When we're quarantined indoors during the winter, we're lucky to get baths twice a week. It's more like once every five days. (Remember, we're all hippies up here in Madison, so we've convinced ourselves that we're preventing childhood allergies by wallowing in our own filth.)

But rather than let us sleep with our skin soaked in chemicals, mama dutifully bathes us. Last night, we got the baths, but she decided she was to tired to finish the job, so we just ran around naked for a while.
It was good for me. I had to air out my folds so I wouldn't get that neck cheese my doctor was talking about.

Henry speed dried himself by running as fast a he could.

And then he participated in some naked dancing. He's going to make some college fraternity proud some day.

Mama heard a rumor that spraying listerine helps keep mosquitoes away. Does anyone know if it's true? Are you supposed to spray it on yourself or just around you? Let us know if this rumor has any base in fact or if you have any other remedies besides bathing in DEET. (Mama is skeptical of all home remedies since she woke up two weeks ago with papa rubbing Vaporub on te bottom of her feet because he heard it would stop her from coughing. It didn't work.)

Cole's pediatrician (24 years ago) said one or two baths a week were adequate (and he wasn't a hippie). He thought too much bathing would make you sick. If Cole is any indication, he only had pneumonia once, one ear infection and two colds before the age of five. So I vote for fewer baths.
As for the mosquitos, Citronella works really well and the critters also don't like lemon. I tried the new dry Off spray and it is less smelly and not oily. Michael and I sat out all evening with a large citronella bucket burning candle and didn't get one bite. My mosquito bites are the size of silver dollar pancakes so I really need to watch!

Love you,
Great Aunt Molly

According to Snopes.com the Listerine Repellent is not a remedy that works...we looked into it too! I thought it may smell better and be cheaper than "real" chemical repellents...stinkin' skeeters!!
